Washington Post Article on Hard Bargain Farm
"For nearly 60 years, the Alice Ferguson Foundation, a nonprofit created in 1954, has been providing outdoor classrooms for Washington area students.
Forty minutes south of Washington, just off Indian Head Highway and up a winding gravel lane lies a two-story white clapboard farmhouse that looks like it has been lost in time. Hard Bargain Farm sits on land that was purchased as a summer retreat in 1922 by Alice Ferguson, an artist, and her husband Henry Ferguson, a geologist."

No Handheld Cell Phone Use While Driving in Md. Beginning Oct. 1
"Maryland will soon join D.C. in making the use of handheld cell phones while driving a primary offense.
Starting October 1, law enforcement officers can stop any driver they see using a handheld wireless device while operating a vehicle.
Getting caught will also cost you a little more. A first-time offender will be fined $75, a $35 increase. A second offense will cost $125 and increase to $175 for a subsequent offense -- up from the original $100 penalty."

Remember, it’s only a game
With the introduction of casinos into the state, Marylanders now have greater access to a variety of gambling and gaming opportunities. While most individuals are able to play responsibly within their limits, some do lose control. For those individuals, there is a 24-hour, 365-day helpline, 800-522-4700. There is also a voluntary exclusion program for individuals who wish to ban themselves from entering - and gambling at all Maryland casinos. Click here for more information.

Highway deaths are up. Here’s how you can help bring them down
"Two-thirds of the fatal crashes in 2011, for example, involved people who were wearing safety belts improperly or not at all, those who were speeding, or those who were driving drunk or distracted. And many were a result of a combination of factors."

Disaster preparedness: How to be ready for the next big storm
From Consumer Reports
What you can do to safeguard your home and family
"There’s no telling whether the rest of this hurricane season will bring anything like Superstorm Sandy, which flooded more than 150,000 homes, killed more than 140 people, and left about 8.5 million homes in 20 states without power. A relatively minor storm can also cause major damage if it includes high winds, heavy rain, or tree-snapping ice or snow.
Even a simple blackout can happen at any time and last for days. More than a half-million New Jersey residents were still without power two weeks after Sandy. And if you think most home-insurance policies cover disasters, think again: Flood insurance is just one of the “extras,” assuming it’s available in your area.
This report lays out the essentials you’ll need to help protect your home and the people in it before disaster strikes."

Student Loan Forgiveness
August 28, 2013
"WASHINGTON (AP) — More than 33 million workers qualify to have their student loans forgiven because they work in schools, hospitals or city halls, but too few take advantage of the options because the programs are overly complicated and often confusing, the government's consumer advocate said Wednesday."
